Blackburn Rovers comfortably overcame Birmingham City 3-0 in the Carling Cup on Wednesday Evening (a win that halted a run of back-to-back defeats) a victory that pleased manager Mark Hughes.

Hughes made a few changes, but not sweeping changes mind as those that came in are still VERY much first team players, if not regulars, however, Martin Olsson came in for his full debut playing 78 minutes before first choice left-back Stephen Warnock replaced him, but the Swede showed that he is a more than able deputy.

Hughes told the Official Blackburn Rovers Website: “I thought we were excellent.

“I thought our general play, the quality of our passing and movement, the way we circulated the ball was first class.

“We could have won even more comfortably but I think it was all to do with our attitude.

“We tried a few things this evening, a little bit different from our normal approach to games and I think it worked. We obviously have won the game and we scored goals, so we’re delighted with that.

Rovers had to wait until a little after the hour to break through, but were always in control and eventually came through 3-0 winners to book a place in the fourth round draw (being made on Saturday) thanks to goals from David Bentley, a corker from 25-yards, a penalty from Matt Derbyshire, who chased the ball at full speed to ensure he took the spot kick and a trademark header from Roque Santa Cruz.
