Hughes: Standards SHOULD Be The Same

Blackburn Rovers have LONG been seen as the Premier League’s “bully boy” side, something that manager Mark Hughes feels isn’t helped by the fact that some clubs are shown more leniency by referees.

With Brett Emerton being sent off on Saturday (he was stupid, I have NO arguments there) against Wigan Athletic that made it three red cards in the last six matches for Rovers (five red cards in total and thirty-five yellows) so this is ALWAYS going to lead to teams just believing that Rovers are as they are portrayed. However, Hughes remains convinced that Rovers (and others) are unfairly treated and those at the very top end of the table are shown more a more lenient approach from officials, something that he felt he noticed in the Arsenal match with Chelsea on Sunday.

Hughes told Setanta Sports: “I saw some challenges that were a bit close to the wire, and I always look and try to relate to what we are trying to do and I do feel that maybe, on occasions, challenges by Blackburn Rovers players are viewed in a different light than maybe teams from the top four.

“People will dispute that and no doubt referees will dispute that, but there were a few challenges in the game yesterday that possibly warranted straight red cards.

“Time and again I see referees pulling over players to have a stern word to tell them to calm down and be careful with their challenges. Unfortunately at Blackburn Rovers we don’t see that happening many times
.”

The top clubs are most definitely shown more leniency, if ALL clubs were having players booked or sent off for some of the things that we are it would be unjust for them but at least it would be fair. Reputations are hard to shift aren’t they and it seems that no mater how hard Rovers try, shifting theirs isn’t easy and this is often used against them.
