Mark Hughes is set to use the strike partnership of Craig Bellamy and Florent Sinama-Pongolle in the season run in. Their impressive display against Spurs has convinced the manager that they could get the goals that see them qualify for Europe.
He told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph: ‘They seem to be enjoying working together; I thought they caused the Spurs back four a lot of problems on Sunday and they’ve got the makings of a decent partnership. If we can keep them both fit and healthy, and supplement them with the guys we have available on the bench, then we have a good mix.’
It was a cross from Bellamy that led to Pongolle scoring his first goal for Blackburn in the 44th minute of Sunday’s game. Sinama-Pongolle then returned the favour by setting Bellamy up for his 12 of the season. The Frenchman on loan from Liverpool seems to be enjoying the partnership too.
‘It’s great (playing alongside Craig). He’s a good player with big character and that’s what we need because we don’t have the biggest strikers in the Premiership. I know that size doesn’t count a lot in football. But he’s a very clever striker and we are both just trying to do the best for the team.’
As for Bellamy, the Welshman took just as much satisfaction from setting up Pongolle’s goal as he did from scoring himself.
