Hughes to keep Tugay Hungry!

Another vintage performance from Blackburn Rovers midfield maestro Tugay with a stunning goal to match during the 3-0 UEFA Cup win over FC Basel can only have reaffirmed what Mark Hughes must have surely already decided… That the legendary Turk will surely have a playing contract at Ewood Park for at least next season!

The veteran continues to defy his years (I know I keep harping on about Tugay but he really is that good as we know!) with his performances, particularly in Europe, especially with the amount of game time he has had to play.

Hughes had been hoping he could use him intermittently this season but injuries and his top form have seen him play most of Rovers’ 15 games this season. Playing 11 in fact, which probably could have been more but for the fact he was suspended for the opening 3 matches, so really he has only sat out one match that he didn’t have to! Speaking in Saturday’s Sun newspaper Hughes said:

I haven’t been able to give him the breaks we both feel he needs. But it certainly hasn’t affected his form.

His latest goal was an absolute cracker and he has been fantastic for us this season.

He gives us something different in midfield, with his vision and passing.

He has a great attitude to training and preparing for matches. And if you do that and look after yourself properly, there is no reason why you cannot keep going for a lot longer than we are used to.

I managed to drag it out until I was 38 and you see Teddy Sheringham scoring for West Ham at 40. I feel that will become more prevalent.”

At 36-years-old Tugay is a whippersnapper who will be at Ewood Park for the 2007-2008 season at least… surely? Speaking on the prospect of a contract extension Hughes added:

I’ll make him wait a while and keep him hungry!

I don’t think they come much hungrier than Tugay Sparky! We all love Tugay but what do we REALLY think of him, leave your tribute to the Turkish Master below…
