Hughes to Move for Veteran?

Transfer rumour and speculation are part and parcel of football, one link; growing momentum is a possible Blackburn Rovers move for veteran Teddy Sheringham.

A move for Teddy Sheringham (which would come to light before Monday’s link with former Rovers striker Chris Sutton rumoured return) currently with his eight different club (including loan spells with Aldershot and Djurgarden) in West Ham United for a player to be considered well past the veteran stage at 40-years-old would be an interesting move…

The former England International, one of a select few to play football in the Premiership whilst in their forties, became the Premierships oldest ever outfield player when turning out for West Ham United in their season opener against Charlton Athletic on 19th August 2006.

The arrival at Upton Park of Carlton Cole in the summer, adding to the opposition already in place from Dean Ashton (currently out injured with a broken ankle), Marlon Harewood and Bobby Zamora would be added to with the amazing deadline day swoop for Argentine forward Carlos Tevez, with this extra competition leaving Sheringham with even more of a fight for a first team place, which he is likely to lose.

Footballers always want first-team football, and with Sheringham in the twilight of his career, with maybe this proving to be his last as a player, he will be even more determined to play as much as he can, but would he really get much more football at Ewood Park?

A reported move to Rovers during the summer transfer window would be rejected by the player, but the most recent reports claim Hughes, only two-years Sheringham senior at 42-years-old, could make a move again in January. Swedish club Djurgarden, a team with whom he spent a loan spell with at the outset of his career are also said to be keen on luring him back to Scandinavia to see out his career. Should he leave West Ham, as seems likely, I doubt he’ll be short of offers.

With Matt Derbyshire, Paul Gallagher, Francis Jeffers, Benni McCarthy, Shabani Nonda and Jason Roberts already with Rovers it remains to be seen whether or not there would be room enough for Sheringham?

Defence seems a priority, however with the need for a creative influence something most at the club would like to see could a link between the midfield and attack see Sheri as a possible candidate? An arrival would almost certainly see him having to settle for role of having an impact on a game from the bench, failing this, despite being in superb physical condition should he start games I’d doubt he would finish too many.

This is an interesting link, and one that although may not come off, despite his age I feel could have potential to work better than that a Chris Sutton re-arrival. Teddy has a fantastic footballing brain, and by having this you have the upper hand over plenty of opponents so could he possibly be a realistic target?

What do you, the Vital Blackburn readers, in fact Vital Football viewers in general make of this, is it more trashy paper talk or could this really happen?
