Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes has again picked out Johann Vogel for praise after another fine performance against Portsmouth on Sunday.

Vogel took sometime to adapt to the Premier League (which, as previously said is understandable considering he hadn’t played a competitive match for 10-months prior to arriving at Ewood Park last month) but has grown in strength and his last two performances have been outstanding. The Swiss International (or former International) has started to show the kind of form that will make his a STAR name for Rovers next season, with this being something that Hughes feels his undoubted quality will prove.

Hughes told the Lancashire Telegraph: “He understands the game.

“He’s got good football intelligence; he knows what teams are trying to do when they are in possession; he blocks holes; he gets a foot in and breaks things up for us; and he’s got great vision and angles to his passing as well, which we saw on many occasions.

“So it was a good performance by him, and by a number of our other players, during the second half
.”

Next season was always likely to be the season that we would see the best of the 31-year-old but it is great to be seeing some signs of this already.
