Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes feels the way the transfer window operates needs reviewing to give teams like Rovers a fairer crack at the whip.
With Rovers hampered by injuries to key players this season Hughes think that teams such as ourselves and our visiting opponents today Newcastle United, also troubled severely by injuries this term should be given more help so a review of the system should happen.
“When anything is in place for any length of time there should be a review. If it’s not working then they should look at it“, said Hughes.
“Clubs and fans want the best players on the pitch. You can address that situation if players are available and you can go into the transfer market and bring in new ones. But that’s been taken away.”
With Ryan Nelsen, Steven Reid and Jason Roberts being the key players missing for Rovers for most, or all of this season to date with long-term injuries Sparky added:
“It does impact on teams who don’t carry big squads. It’s been a problem for Newcastle and us. Hopefully in January we’ll get three players back – and we will look at the transfer market.”
I can see what Sparky is saying but I’m not sure there are many ways round it? You can’t have a mid season transfer window (halfway through the summer and January windows) as the “big boys” will just go out further and strengthen moving them further ahead.
Maybe, as is the case with goalkeepers and injuries special dispensation can be made for a club to at least make an emergency transfer or two, if only on loan? But this should only happen if you have a series of injuries to key personnel and when I say key personnel I mean regular first team starters not merely fringe players who will get little or not look-in in any case, this is where the “bigger boys” would be unable to benefit?
