Blackburn Rovers boss Mark Hughes is looking for his players to get back to winning in the Premiership against Aston Villa today.

Rovers face the difficult task of travelling to Villa Park, a ground that hasn’t been kind to us over the years as we look to build on the win over FC Basel in the UEFA and stop the rot that had seen successive Premiership defeats. Hughes said:

It will be a difficult game for us. It always is when you go to Villa Park, but I feel it is a place we can go and get a positive result. That is how we will view the game.

It is an opportunity to get our Premier League form back on track after two defeats and that is what we are aiming to do.

I think we’ve done quite well after European games and had some decent results immediately following the games. We are aware of the danger of trying to ease ourselves into games, so I think you will see a very positive opening period from us. Then, hopefully that will enable us maintain that intensity in our play right through the game.

We are playing well, but we had a blip last week. Performance wise we have been good and the game against Basel was a reflection of that.

With Villa unbeaten at home this season in the League and Cup our task is even harder but we have to see this game as one that we can win despite the impact Martin O’Neill has made since taking over Villa in the summer.

Speaking on the lift O’Neill has given Villa Hughes added:

They’ve had a good start under Martin’s leadership. There is a lot of interest and excitement surrounding the club at the moment what with new owners and new management, so I think the players have been caught up in all that and have improved their performances as a consequence.

Everybody has acknowledged that they have always had a good group of players.

The impact that a new manager can have on a group is plain to see. Martin O’Neill is a big personality and that personality has come to the fore. They are getting good results, but we will be looking to go there to get a positive result ourselves.”

As I say we don’t always travel well to Villa Park and they may be unbeaten at home this season but maybe this weekend could see a change in fortunes? Confidence must be high following the superb UEFA Cup win so you never know what might happen, although I think I will be more than happy if we come away with a point!
