Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes’ favourite phase is “we were excellent”, and he said it again today after the 3-1 victory over Wigan Athletic.

Following dropped points against Fulham (1-1 draw) and West Ham United (2-1 defeat) in recent weeks it was essential that Rovers won today and after an early goal from Roque Santa Cruz, despite Marlon King equalising soon after another from Jason Roberts and Santa Cruz’s second secured victory, much to Sparky’s pleasure.

Hughes told the BBC: “I thought we were excellent, a lot of big performances today.

“It was really important we won and I said beforehand the players had to understand the significance of the game and as a consequence we got a really good performance
.”

The draw back was Christopher Samba’s sending off, which came about as a result of a foul that saw Wigan also awarded a penalty, from which King scored. Sparky wasn’t pleased with the sending off as he maintains that the punishment that is dished out in these circumstances isn’t fitting.

He added: “In the circumstances you usually expect a penalty to be given and that was the case.

“But the punishment did not fit the crime; they scored the penalty, it is 1-0 and you are down to 10 men
.”

  • The win today was essential and I think that the win was deserved, with the other results today the European charge is back on!!! (But was it ever of?!?!)

  • our discipline is starting to get on my nerves! we give a ridiculous number of free kicks away just outside the box (i said this a fter the boro game) then one week later we concede a goal vs villa from a free then we give two points away to fulham cos of sambas indiscipline and then today he makes a silly needless foul in the box gives away a pen and gets sent off, whether it should be a sending off just cos it was a tug is neither here nor there he was last man and had to go, a la nelsen vs villa, do our lads not learn from their mistakes cos it will cost us! sorry for the rant but it gets to me big time. at least we won today though

  • may i also add that its great to see roberts do well and score (he took his goal very well) he may have gobbed off a little and handed in a transfer request but he has given absolutely everything for the cause when he has played. more of the same please JR

  • a fantastic victory, i didnt get to see the match, hence no match report, darn cable tv went down lol. Anyways i assure you the match report segment will be back and running following our next premier league encounter

  • Roberts was a constant menace and fair play to him with his celebration… he kept it low key out of respect for his old club.

  • any team down to 10 men early on in a game, conceding a pen and being 1-0 down as well, then coming back to win 3-1 without making knee jerk changes, keeping on 2 strikers for the whole game should be able to reveal in an important win!! God if only we had gone to 10 men against the Hammered and Fulham, who knows wot may have happened lol It was an important, morale building win for Rovers!!!
