Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes’ favourite phase is “we were excellent”, and he said it again today after the 3-1 victory over Wigan Athletic.

Following dropped points against Fulham (1-1 draw) and West Ham United (2-1 defeat) in recent weeks it was essential that Rovers won today and after an early goal from Roque Santa Cruz, despite Marlon King equalising soon after another from Jason Roberts and Santa Cruz’s second secured victory, much to Sparky’s pleasure.

Hughes told the BBC: “I thought we were excellent, a lot of big performances today.

“It was really important we won and I said beforehand the players had to understand the significance of the game and as a consequence we got a really good performance
.”

The draw back was Christopher Samba’s sending off, which came about as a result of a foul that saw Wigan also awarded a penalty, from which King scored. Sparky wasn’t pleased with the sending off as he maintains that the punishment that is dished out in these circumstances isn’t fitting.

He added: “In the circumstances you usually expect a penalty to be given and that was the case.

“But the punishment did not fit the crime; they scored the penalty, it is 1-0 and you are down to 10 men
.”
