I want to bring a trophy to Blackburn“, just some of the words Rovers’ Morten Gamst Pedersen has spoken in relation to tonight’s Carling Cup.

The League Cup in its various guises has been very kind to Rovers in recent times but you don’t get many tougher challenges than that which we face tonight. At Ewood Park with an 8pm kick off Rovers face the reigning Premiership Champions and Carling Cup winners from the season before last the mighty Chelsea.

Gamst Pedersen concedes that the task put before us will be very difficult but is by no means impossible. He said:

Chelsea don’t have a first team and a reserve team, they have two first teams. You know it is going to be a hard game against Chelsea, but we have a chance. We’ve beaten them at Ewood Park before so why not again?

If you are going to win the Cup you have to beat teams like this and if we get through maybe we have a better chance to go all the way.

Chelsea even have world class players on the bench so it will be a difficult match against them whatever team they put out.

We’ve been playing really well, we were eight games unbeaten before the Bolton game, and hopefully we can get a new run of unbeaten games.

It is a chance to win something so in my opinion it is an important competition, I want to bring a trophy to Blackburn.”

The Norwegian, who in all truth has struggled to find his form this season has the kind of attitude towards this game I want to hear. The League Cup has had a somewhat unfair reputation in recent years with many teams failing to take it seriously often fielding below par side’s not caring if they progress or not which if nothing else if unfair on the paying fans!

When all is said and done it is still a major trophy in the English game and if nothing else gives you a guaranteed route into Europe via the UEFA Cup so it deserves to be taken seriously and I for one would be thrilled should we go on and win the competition. Chelsea obviously take it seriously as they went onto win it in 2005 and also fielded a strong side in losing to Charlton Athletic last season on penalties.

Come on Blackburn you know you can do it, Chelsea are a fantastic football team but if anyone can do it we can. The home advantage could also make all the difference for us so let’s hope we get another big crowd that is right behind us.
