Blackburn Rovers manager Paul Ince doesn’t believe that the 4-0 defeat Rovers suffered at Ewood Park to Arsenal on Saturday afternoon told the whole story of the match.

Rovers had chances to score against Arsenal, but not taking them against a side of their quality always leaves you open to punishment. Robin Van Persie put Arsenal ahead but missed chances (at both ends) saw Rovers dealt a suck blow on the stroke of half time when Emmanuel Adebayor added a second. Further chances went begging for Rovers, and then two second half goals saw Adebayor complete his hat-trick and give Arsenal what appears to be a comfortable win, but Ince feels this wasn’t entirely the case.

Ince told the Official Blackburn Rovers Website: “I thought in the first 45 minutes the boys did ever so well to be fair.

“We created a host of chances but so did they. It could have been something like 4-3. But we were definitely in the game but the goal just before half-time killed us.

Poor defending was a major part of our undoing (as it has been for most of the season to date) and Incey knows this is something of a problem area, and something we need to work on.

He added: “Had we gone in at 1-0 down then we’d be saying keep doing what you are doing, but a lack of concentration and suicidal defending has cost us.

“You can’t give any team a two-goal start, let alone a very good Arsenal side, and once it went 2-0 it was important that we got an early goal in the second half but that never looked like coming.

“Then it was a case of just playing and trying to get back in the game, but Arsenal are a very good side, thankfully we haven’t got to play them every week.

“There are a lot of things to work on defensively, conceding eight goals in two games is not good.

“Even though we are playing well and are creating chances we certainly need to tighten up a bit.
