Ince: Missed Chances Cost Us

Paul Ince suffered his first competitive defeat as Blackburn Rovers manager on Saturday after a 4-1 defeat against his former side West Ham United.

Callum Davenport and then an own goal from Christopher Samba gave West Ham an ideal start but Jason Roberts hit back immediately after the second Hammers goal. Matt Derbyshire harshly had a goal ruled out for offside and then Roberts saw a second half penalty saved by Robert Green before injury time goals from former Rover Craig Bellamy and Carlton Cole gave the scoreline a flattering look. However, despite the defeat Ince wasn’t that disappointed but did rued missed chances.

Ince was quoted on Sky Sports as saying: “In the second half we were far the better side but we didn’t take our chances.

“We’re disappointed because there were a lot of situations where we felt we could have scored goals.

“We came out in the second half and really took the game to them and we had a chance of an equaliser from the penalty spot but it wasn’t to be.

“There were two or three situations that would have changed the course of the game but we didn’t capitalise on it and they scored late goals. That just sums up how the game went
.”

There is a concern over Roque Santa Cruz though, with the Paraguayan picking up an Achilles injury, however, with the International break now on us he should be fit by the time this is over and Premier League action returns.

He added: “It’s looking like the same injury that he picked up against Wolves a few weeks ago.

“It’s a problem with his Achilles so he’ll need a few days to a week to recover.

“You miss people like Roque, we use him as our main man and it’s difficult to not let it affect the team.

“But Jason Roberts played well today and it’s a shame he couldn’t get more goals.
