It’s Not ALL About Richardson

It is not just the spoken media that overlook Blackburn Rovers, I noticed this in the written form on Friday.

Whilst reading the sports pages in Friday’s edition of the Sun (although it could have been the Daily Mirror, but what’s the difference!) I came across an article on Manchester United’s Kieran Richardson.

The newspaper in question lavished praise upon the England under-21 International, a player also capped at senior level (with goals to his name to boot) and he was sounded out as being ‘the only player who could possibly feature in the opening two matches at the new Wembley’. The games in question, England’s under-21 friendly with Italy this weekend just been and the FA Cup Final in May. At the time I didn’t give it much thought but then it dawned on me, aren’t they forgetting something?

Yes Manchester United will be favourites to overcome Watford and yes Chelsea will start as favourites to beat Rovers but even so this still left two Rovers players as players with more than a possibility of featuring in both of these matches! David Bentley started the England match, as was always likely, becoming the first Englishman to score at the new Wembley. Matt Derbyshire came on as a second half substitute (also scoring). Both will almost certainly be part of the Rovers squad, if not the starting XI should we overcome Chelsea to make the FA Cup Final. Richardson on the other hand would arguable have an outside chance at the bench at best for United.

This oversight annoyed me more as I thought about it and is yet another blatant show of disrespect towards Blackburn Rovers, and another clear indication that it is not only Sky Sports and the BBC that show favouritism to the top four in the land but the written press also.
