Jason Brown – Hero Already

It seems that Mark Hughes’ Welsh connections have paid off yet again. How many other Rovers thoughts turned to concern after hearing that Brad Friedel had been subbed?

But this time we didn’t have to concern ourselves with thoughts of Peter Enckelman, instead Jason Brown, a free transfer from Gillingham, came on and looked bright and when called upon he emulated his current Mentor and saved not only the penalty but two rebounds, what a compliment the Blackburn End gave him, signing “Are you Friedel in disguise.”

How many seasons now have we all quietly prayed that nothing happens to Brad, now that worry seems to have evaporated overnight. When Brad decides to retire, may that not be for a long while, Jason is more than able to fill his boots.

Jason started his career at Charlton Athletic but Gillingham picked up the then 19-year-old on a free in March 2001. He worked his place in the first team whilst making appearances for the Welsh U21 side. In 2003 he won the Welsh Young Player of the year award.

In 2005 he suffered an injury spell with both thumb and thigh presenting him with worries. Forever a “gills” man, he resigned himself to leaving Gillingham when Swansea looked to call upon his services, but in stepped Eddie Niedzwiecki, who Brown knew from the Wales Team, and a place on Rovers bench was deemed more attractive than starting for Swansea.

He made his debut for Rovers at the Fraser Eagle Stadium and in the second half of the friendly encounter showed that he was keen to impress the boss, rarely challenged by the Stanley front men.

His chance at half time on Sunday came and he was more than capable of filling Brad’s very large gloves. At the age of 24 he has a long career ahead of him and perhaps he will join that illustrious group of Friedel, Flowers and Mimms…
