When Jason Brown arrived at Blackburn Rovers in the summer he was always going to face a battle to dislodge number one Brad Friedel.

The highly rated 24-year-old Welsh International, who played the full 90 minutes of Wales’ midweek 4-0 victory over Liechtenstein, arrived on free transfer from Gillingham in the summer.

Brown feels that his development has already been helped since his arrival at Ewood Park and is prepared to bide his time and wait for his chance. Brown said:

I knew what I was getting myself into when I first went to Blackburn, but I am happy to be there, happy to work with the staff and I have already felt the improvements in my game.

I have come on in leaps and bounds already, it’s a good opportunity and I am sure I will be able step in and do well when the chance does come.

It is massively encouraging for me that John Toshack was still prepared to give me the chance to play for Wales this week, as it would be easy to say ‘You are not playing league football so you can’t play for Wales’.

But I have loads of experience already. I’m at a Premiership club and I am involved with some great players in the best league in the world.

There are plenty of players not starting games but the atmosphere and level of quality is something you cannot help but learn from.”

Although Friedel is still very much the number one I for one will have no problems with Brown stepping in if and when needed. He’s already proved his worth with his substitute appearances against Wigan Athletic, saving Svetoslav Todorov’s penalty and the subsequent rebounds.

Brown also went on to praise Friedel and acknowledge just how long he may have to wait for his chance. This article is one for another time and will be added shortly?
