Having taken the chance on signing Francis Jeffers the early signs are that Mark Hughes’ decision to bring him to Blackburn Rovers will be a good one.
The past few years have been difficult for Jeffers, who arrived at Ewood Park on a free transfer in the summer following his release by Charlton Athletic. At 25-years-old he still has plenty of time ahead of him to get back to his very best form, or somewhere near it although he feels he could recapture this sooner rather than later. Speaking to Sky Sports News Jeffers said:
“I am probably playing the best I have for a couple of years or so. I am getting there.
“It was going to take time as I missed the whole of last season, pre-season was good for me and I feel like I am getting better.”
Jeffers feels that the team selection policy with Rovers is a case of you play well you stay in the team, which may not have been the case with previous clubs especially Arsenal; although he was quick to point out he enjoyed his time with the Gunners:
“If you do well you stay in the team, that’s the way I’ve seen it here and it is good.
“That probably wasn’t the case at Arsenal, as there were always world-class players ready to come in and take your place.
“I enjoyed it at Arsenal, don’t get me wrong, I made the decision at the time as I went to win medals and I won two FA Cups with them and I played my part in helping them win the league.
“That (a goal) is all I need, but it does not worry me as I know it will come. Wherever I have played, I have always nicked goals.”
His desire to represent England again having won his one and only England cap to date against Australia in 2003, coming on to score as a second half substitute is something he has been unable to hide and despite his football with Rovers being his priority he still harbours hopes of getting back into the squad:
“I got in the England squad a couple of years ago, scored one goal and then just wasn’t playing enough to keep myself in the squad.
“I would love to be back playing for England again, but it is more important I get back playing well for Blackburn.”
With Jeffers working on regaining his fitness the early signs are promising as some of his movement has been superb. He would indeed be instrumental in David Bentley’s goal against Wigan Athletic in Rovers’ last Premiership match. His movement and vision played Bentley in to score.
As his fitness improves with more games played his confidence will also grow and when he gets that first goal who knows what he will go on to achieve.
