Rovers chairman John Williams insists that Rovers will not be forced into selling key players like last pre-season and instead can enjoy the relative safety that financial prudence brings.

Williams told BBC Radio Lancashire: ‘We have, through the Premier League, managed to secure some attractive rises in overseas television revenues.

‘Those differences effectively mean we can return to being a trading club rather than a selling club.’

Rovers spent a very small portion of the money they re-couped last pre-season which bought about a lot of unrest amongst the Ewood faithful… but without the balancing of the books Rovers could of been faced with a Portsmouth like situation.

Williams continued – ‘It is a fact that we had to sell Roque Santa Cruz and Stephen Warnock in order to balance the books and maintain wage levels that were necessary for us to be competitive.

‘The difference going forward is that within reason we can maintain our wage bill without the need to sell.

‘It means that the 10th-place money has protected the fund started by the sale of Benni McCarthy to West Ham, so we have got some spending power in this close season.’

Very well said as usual from the best chairman in the business.

  • exactly mikey. there no confusion and no worry. this is how it is and we shall back you in mr williams

  • If Carlsberg did Football Chairmen… He would probably be just like John Williams. Just a shame theres no reward in the Premier League for running your club properly and spending to your means.

  • Williams is such a class act. He always lets us know exactly where the club is at, and as Mikey quite rightly says.. its not like he has to. Its the main reason why there is such an excellent relationship between the board and the supporters.

  • The fans should do something for John to show our appreciation, he should have his own chant, or maybe we can buy him some flowers?

  • Good to see all of us on Vital totally back Williams and Co. Whilst ravageing around for news, i read of so many negative rovers, they just dont understand like we do!

Cheers to the best chairman in the game!

  • john is a fantastic person, and so is simon. they both work hard in the office to do whats right for the club.

  • Pound for pound we must be the best club in the league – probably bar Arsenal – all down to Mr. Williams

  • …I was waiting for the cynical Oztheman comment… then remembered he’s been booted out! Whatever happened to him – was he taken out, mafia style?
