Jonesy makes U-21 squad

Phil Jones has been named in Stuart Pearce’s under 21 side for this summer’s Euro Championships in sunny Denmark.

Jonesy has been named in the same squad as former Rover Fran Fielding who will be competing for the number one shirt.

Jones will be a key member of the side who have come close at both the last major under 21 tournaments.

It should be of great benefit for Jones to play having missed a decent slice of the last season so the fear of burnout shouldn’t be too great and you can’t beat a bit of tournament play.

England boss Pearce himself has backed down in the much publicised argument of picking high profile players so has omitted Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere and Liverpool’s Andy Carroll.

Pearce had disputed with former Rovers boss Kenny Dalglish and human arrogance and stubbornness template Arsene Wenger over the merits of playing both the players in question as both have been in the full England squad recently.

But both have been left out which will no doubt please their club bosses.
