Rovers boss Steve Kean has hailed his boys after a spirited showing in the 1-0 win over Bolton at the weekend.

Local neighbours Bolton (who are just as local and as much a rival as both Manchester teams we are informed by a very difficult news source) provided a stern examination for Rovers but in the end the 1-0 win was fully deserved.

Kean believes that the club’s superior goal difference in relation to other club’s below them effectively acts as an extra point and that the need for points spurred the players on.

Kean told the Lancashire Telegraph – “We thought a few weeks ago we would need the highest points tally but people have been dropping points lately.

“I would imagine if you have 40 points and a good goal difference that is going to see you safe.

“We have always said we can only look after ourselves. We can go on and look forward to the West Ham game.

“I thought we performed with a lot of spirit, attitude and togetherness. We were all together and today. It wasn`t a desire for the points, it was a need.

“It was a very, very different emotion. I think you could feel it in the dressing room, you could sense the focus and I thought they gave an outstanding professional performance.”
