Steve Kean has backed new loan singing Anthony Modeste to make the most of his new start after the striker was announced as a Rovers player last night.

Modeste signed up for the relegation fight at Ewood Park on loan for six months after losing his way at Bordeaux this season and not having started a game for the Frenchmen since October.

But despite many casting doubts over his ability to be, you know, any good our Scottish leader has only to point as far as Yakubu to remind people of writing players off too quickly.

Kean told the Lancashire Telegraph – “Modeste moved to Bordeaux for a sizeable fee and, probably a little bit like Yak when he joined us, he will feel he still has a lot to prove.

“I don`t think there is anything wrong with giving a player another opportunity to kick on. Maybe it just went wrong for him for whatever reason at another club.

“He has certainly got attributes I think we can look at to improve us, hence the reason for bringing him.

“He has pace, power, good technique, he causes defenders problems playing on the shoulder, which I think can give us something else we don`t have.”

Rovers have not secured any option to buy which brings back memories of the Jermaine Jones situation of last season where he put in a blinding effort at Ewood Park but we were unable to secure him longer term as Rovers were priced out of a move.

Kean though had to be realistic.

Kean continued – “I think options to buy are a two-way thing,

f you can get an option in with us before he comes to the club then that is obviously to our advantage.

“Some clubs will say you can have an option with the player but you must take him and then sometimes it is left open.

“The danger is if you leave it open and he does well then you might not get him, like with Jermaine Jones.

“But that is a two-way thing. Hopefully he can show us in the initial part of the loan what he can do and then if we can work on getting something agreed with Bordeaux then great, if not we have to respect his parent club.”
