Andrew Fisher’s progress into the Blackburn first team squad this season has seen him rewarded with a new and extended contract.

Fisher will now remain at Ewood Park until the summer of 2019.

His new deal means the goalkeeper has followed the likes of Scott Wharton, Ryan Nyambe and Willem Tomlinson, who have all come through the Blackburn academy, in signing an extended deal in recent times.

A regular for the U23 side, Fisher has made three first team appearances this season, all in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Now that his immediate future has been secured Fisher, 19, is now looking to further impress Tony Mowbray and put pressure on his competition for the number one spot, David Raya and Jayson Leutwiler, who have, along with the coaches, been especially supportive for him.

Commenting on his new deal he told the Official Website: ‘I’m delighted to sign the new contract. It’s been a while coming but it’s over the line now which is pleasing. I’ve had so much support from the coaches and the likes of David and Jayson. Both are really good ‘keepers, they help me along and we all want each other to do well.’

Fisher’s debut was made against Stoke’s U23 side this season, he went on to admit he was ‘slightly nervous’ about it but his clean sheet was ‘a real confidence booster’ for him.

These chances weren’t expected this season and Fisher wants as many more of these opportunities as possible, be that in the Blackburn first team or going out on loan, which might not be possible at this time.

He said: ‘The gaffer’s put his faith in me in the Checkatrade Trophy games and I just want more whether it be getting games here or going out on loan. I didn’t expect to get too much first team football so it’s been important to grab those opportunities when they come around. These experiences are massive and you need to get games under your belt as early as possible. It’s hard at the moment being third choice and it’s difficult for the gaffer to let me go out on loan just in case Jayson gets injured.’
