Kicking off at Rovers ladies?

Blackburn Rovers ladies were on Sunday knocked out of the Women’s Premier League Cup, but not before much controversy, which resulted in the referee receiving a police escort from the pitch…

Unibond side Clitheroe’s ground, Shawbridge, home to Rovers ladies would be the scene of much drama on Sunday afternoon as Rovers were eventually beaten 6-3 by Chelsea in extra time after having two players sent off.

Having gone 1-0 down, Rovers fought back to lead 3-1, before Chelsea’s own revival forced extra time. It was during extra time that referee Ross Joyce sent off Rovers’ Amanda Barr and Linda Shepherd, which ultimately lead to the 6-3 defeat.

At the final whistle the crowd of 200 or more people were so vigorous in their protests that Rovers officials called in the police to give the referee a police escort out of the ground. A Rovers spokesman, Marek Walsh would have this to say:

It was a right kerfuffle.

And it wasn’t only the Blackburn supporters – the Chelsea fans were just as upset with the ref’s decisions.”

Meanwhile, whilst on the subject of ladies football I would like to congratulate the England International ladies team on their qualification for the 2007 World Cup Finals.

Following a 1-1 draw with France over the weekend England qualified for the World Cup Finals for only the second time. The Finals take place in China next year, starting in early September.

This brings us nicely onto another poll suggestion, again from Vital Blackburn member govtpros, under the title of:

At which level do you think the England women’s team would cope best if they were allowed to play against the men?

You will have six options to choose from, and I think this could prove an interesting poll, I just hope that people approach it by giving the ladies game the respect it deserves, as there are a lot of very, very good lady footballers out there, many of whom could show their better known and far better paid counterparts in the men’s game how to play!
