As the transfer window nears it’s close it has been revealed by Skysports.com that Liverpool have apparently made a bid for Lucas Neill.

Recent reports suggested Liverpool had been interested, but it now seems they are ready to firm up their interest and test Rovers’ resolve (for a player the club will not want to lose) with a bid for a player who will be out of contract next summer.

With Neill’s versatility, him literally being able to play anywhere along the back four, Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez could see the Australian International as an ideal addition to his Anfield squad. Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United however could prove opposition.

UPDATE Thursday 31st August 2006, 10:25
Liverpool will make an improved bid today, after having a £2 million bid rejected on Wednesday.

Neill appears to want the move to Liverpool and Benitez wants him. It is now down to Hughes and Rovers to decide how much they really want to keep Neill before he walks away for free next summer, signing a pre-contract with a club in January.

Speaking with someone last night I said if Rovers could get £4 million for the player I thought they’d accept it. Recent reports suggest Liverpool WILL bid this amount and he will sign before midnight.
