When Mr Souness stole Lucas Neill from Millwall he had a sneaky thought at the back of his mind that he had signed a real footballer, so it has proved. He was initially his masters clone a complete competitor, who hated losing; even going to the extreme (in referee’s minds) on many occasions causing red cards and suspensions. He has matured as a footballer however and would walk into any of the top teams, so do not be surprised if another Scottish manager, just down the road, comes in with a late bid for our Lucas.
I was then a little surprised to hear some booing from the Blackburn end during the debacle against the toon. Yes he was poor but I think he was an easy target. How he can be booed and Nonda left alone defies explanation? The reaction has been predictable, a winning goal in Europe, which may earn us more money than his fee, a defiant gesture towards his distracters and a dramatic improvement in his performances, perhaps the booing has refocused his mind.
It has made me realise how much we will miss him when he goes. If we were further up the league he would still have wanted to go but the abuse he would have received would have been nil, he has been picked on because the team have been poor. So lets give him a good send off lets not give him any reason to come back and ram our taunts down our throats like a certain centre forward now retired.
A little of Lucas Neill’s commitment, energy, detirmination and unwillingness to hide, even when things are not going well are attributes that a lot of his team mates lack and they are qualities we will not replace.
