Tony Mowbray was hopeful of keeping Connor Mahoney at Blackburn beyond the end of his current deal but his mind has apparently been made up, he’ll turn down a new deal and join a Championship club instead.

According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Sunderland and Barnsley had been linked with Mahoney but his impending Blackburn exit will see the winger join a so-far unnamed club this summer.

First offered a new deal at the turn of the year when loan interest was expressed, Mahoney had been advised by Mowbray to stay at Ewood Park and get some regular football under his belt to unlock his true potential. The Blackburn boss was in fact willing to accept Mahoney, 20, could outgrow Rovers and would therefore allow him to leave if interest he couldn’t refuse was shown.

The offer of a new deal looks as though it’ll be turned down with the Telegraph reporting Mahoney could complete his transfer to his new club next week. Due to the fact he’s under the age of 24 and was offered a new deal Blackburn will be entitled to a compensation fee.
