Blackburn Rovers striker Benni McCarthy hailed the 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic as a “phenomenal” win.

McCarthy opened the scoring in the Ewood Park encounter on the stroke of half time and was delighted with the win that moved Rovers six points clear of the relegation zone. The South African International is now looking for us to secure our Premier League place and take the pressure of before the season ends.

McCarthy told Sky Sports: “It was phenomenal today. We came out from the start flying, we did what we were expected to do.

“It’s just a shame we always leave it late and we’re in the situation we are now.

“Hopefully this can motivate us for the next couple of games so we can get it off our minds and we won’t have to rely on everyone else.

Due to injuries to Roque Santa Cruz and Jason Roberts (who was a pundit for Sky Sports) defender Christopher Samba once again filled in as a make-shift striker to partner McCarthy and he gained praise from Benni for the problems he caused.

He added: “It’s weird but very nice because with his height he does distract a lot of the defenders and he takes all the attention and make you play with a bit of ease.

“He’s been fantastic and the boys have been calling him Drogba, Kanu and Adebayor.

“He plays striker in training and he does all these fancy things and he seems to pull it off.

Using Samba as a striker is certainly unorthodox but the Wall is certainly effective, however, I’ll personally be glad when Sam Allardyce either has the genuine strikers back or brings in the players that he wants in the summer.
