After yet another superb performance Blackburn Rovers midfielder David Bentley reflected on the UEFA Cup defeat to Bayer Leverkusen admitting missed chances cost us… almost!
I say missed chances almost costs us, we still went down 3-2 to Leverkusen in Germany but the two away goals, the one at the death from Shabani Nonda in particular could prove priceless as I’m certain that we will win the second leg at Ewood Park next Thursday so having to win by one goal as opposed to two (although I still think we’ll do this anyway!) will make the job a lot easier than it could have been.
The 3-2 defeat could and maybe should have been different as Rovers were guilty of missing chances a plenty that could have seen the game out of Leverkusen’s reach by half time! As it was the sides went in with Leverkusen 2-1 up, having taken the lead against the run of play only for Bentley to equalise with a deflected free kick; another deflection saw the host’s lead resorted on half time. When speaking to Five after the game Bentley said:
“We started very well. We had a lot of chances but we didn’t take them – and we conceded some bad goals.
“I am pleased to get on the scoresheet, but it was more important to get the away goals.
“It was a great finish from Nonda – we got a bit lucky, but there you go. Now we are just looking to take it into the second leg.”
Leverkusen to their credit also created many openings and maybe could have scored more themselves so we have to be thankful for the fact they didn’t.
So it is all set up nicely for the second leg but one man who will definitely not participate is Aaron Mokoena. The South African International picked up his third booking of the competition so will have to sit out the second leg to serve a one match ban.
