Day 1 of the 2009/2010 edition of the English Premier League featured Manchester City travelling to Ewood Park to face Blackburn Rovers. Allardyce handed debut’s to Lars Jacobsen and Nzonzi, with Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts given the nod up front.

The season got of to the worst possible start for Rovers. After missing a chance of their own at the City end, with Richard Dunne clearing of the line, the Sky Blues then countered. Wright Phillips darted down the right flank, cutting inside Warnock, laying the ball off to Adebayor, who slotted it into the back of the net. 1-0 City….

Rovers follow up with 2 good chances which were scuffed by their target men. Benni McCarthy sprayed wide from 10 yards, then Jason Roberts blasts over from 12 Yards. Poor misses from the front men. Rovers continue to pressure, with a mix of an aerial style of football, as well as some neat play down the flanks, but the execution is lacking.

Late in the half, Rovers were denied a penalty, with Andrews shot striking Dunne’s Elbow. Replays showed the ball does strike the elbow, but their was minimal intention.

Half Time. Great Start for City, but Rovers really have dominated play, however, the difference in execution is evident….

Second Half gets underway, and its more of the same, long ball with a bit of variation. Rovers continue to dominate, but Shay Given pulls of a string of wonderful saves to prevent Roberts, Gamst and Benni.

Di Santo replaces Roberts with 30 to go. Gallagher and Hoillet also find themselves on the pitch. Rovers are then given 3-4 set opportunities from set pieces, however Gamst and Benni prove wasteful, blasting over or wide each time.

Rovers continued to push on, hoping to clinch a late equaliser, however deep into injury time, City clinched the sealer, with a fast paced counter attack finding Steven Ireleand, who held the ball up then slotted past Robinson’s near post to seal the points

2-0 Manchester City
Poor Finishing…
We did have our chances, and didnt take them. Lets hope the boys dont lose confidence from this, as they really did play some good football in patches….
