Blackburn Rovers had two players representing their countries at Under-21 level on Tuesday Evening and they had mixed degrees of fortunes results wise, even if both played their part.

Matt Derbyshire started for the England Under-21’s as they followed up their opening European Under-21 Championship Qualifying victory over Montenegro with another victory, this time a 2-0 win over Bulgaria in Sofia. Derbyshire played 82 minutes and helped set up the second goal scored by West Ham United’s Mark Noble.

Left-back Martin Olsson was again said to be impressive as he played the full 90 minutes of Sweden’s Under-21 friendly with Germany. Unfortunately for Olsson his Swedish side succumbed to a 2-1 defeat, but it is yet further valuable experience for the highly rated Rovers youngster, who is currently the back up to Stephen Warnock at left-back following Bruno Berner’s injury.

The focus of attention switches to the senior England side tonight as England take on Russia in the latest MUST win European Championship Qualifier, a match in which it is hoped avid Bentley can again feature for England, and this time to a more hospitable atmosphere.
