With YOUR help Vital Blackburn has been trying to determine what have been the best and worst of the Blackburn Rovers 2006-2007 season.

The nominations are still be taken for other Awards, but the Vital Blackburn Awards for 2006-2007 continue to be dished out with the

Most Improved Player of the Season

When asked to simply leave the name of your Most Improved Player of the Season most felt?

Aaron Mokoena should be the Award Winner! So congratulations to Mokoena on winning this Award.

Mokoena and Brett Emerton (who I personally feel deserves an honorary mention here at least, for a vast improvement even though he played in a different position this season to the one he has in previous seasons) battled it out for this accolade but it was the South African International that just won it.

The Axe has not always been a favourite with many people, and has all to often been ridiculed for his footballing talent, often (and VERY unfairly for me) viewed as a liability even. So for him to have improved to the extent to win this shows he really must have shown major improvement. Although in fairness to the Axe he rarely got an extended run in the side until he did last season, and he took it with both hands.

With Robbie Savage out with a broken leg we were VERY worried, and some even petrified at the thought of the Axe coming in for him but he grew into the role, his confidence soared and he became a vital member of the starting XI, excelling with the new found responsibility and showed that he really is another of Mark Hughes’ bargain discoveries, and he even scored!

  • My own vote (which came early on in the voting) went to Brett Emerton, but as this poll went on I came round to the Aaron Mokoena thinking more and more, so I’m happy to see either win. Ideally they would have tied, as Brett has shown MASSIVE improvement (maybe this may have been in a different position to the one we are used to, but he improved nonetheless) but it wasn’t to be, so congratulations to the Axe!
The Axe has more than shown he is a footballer who can be counted on, so Sav will have to be on his toes or the Axe will be in to take his place, no one (well almost no one!) is assured of a place, not even Sav.

  • Congrats to mokoena. many people were asking for the axe to be axed. But he really has come in leaps and bounds this year. With Savage out, he was given the role of the grinder, and whilst at first he could not pass a ball, he finally learnt that. And that alone deseves the award lol

  • He really is a genuine alternative in midfield. He started the season as a poor mans right back but is now a fully fledged Rovers player.

  • Happy Days for the Axe but I would have went for Emerton, since he switched to riteback he’s looked a player, I did wonder for a while just why other clubs were after him when we got him but his move has done him the power of good, not the best riteback in terms of defending and can be caught out of position at times but this will come to him in time, but its the fact he works so well with Bentley on that rite hand side! Not wanting to take away anything from Mokoena there as well cos he does deserve it for coming good to replace Savage, when he, lets face it, had his doubters!!

  • Clint – Good call dude, Emerton was VERY close to getting this and early on I thought he would walk it (and at that time deservingly so, but my own opinion changed as it went on.)
I have not been one of these anti Axe people, but have not always been convinced by him. However, I am now FULLY convinced by him and will HAPPILY see him play more than a bit part from now on if needed.

  • HAHA, i was the first to offer up Aaron!! and I was one of his biggest critics and doubters before his run in the team! Well done Aaron.

  • Yeah you were dude, but in fairness to you you were also one of the first to come out and say you were wrong. I like everyone (probably as I’m a soft touch, or too diplomatic or a combination of both!) APART from Spurs LOL!

  • Sacrilege HDM, worship at the altar of White Hart Lane!!!! LOL Hey credit where its due mate, he still IMO is better as a centre half but hes not a bad CDM now, thanks in part to Savage’s leg! Hail Sav’s leg!!

  • I didn’t catch any fish with my Spurs comment, they don’t seem to bite during the close season, LOL. Hail Sav’s leg, Hail Axe and Hail to I don’t know what else I’ve run out of ideas and my head hurts now!
