Move for Neill best for whom?

In the wake of the recent Panorama Investigation: Football’s Dirty Secrets I started thinking for whom is a Lucas Neill move from Blackburn Rovers really best for?

Having being unable to watch the programme when it originally aired I have now had a chance to view it and despite it being interesting enough and providing an insight into the seedy underbelly of football corruption it would prove somewhat of a damp squib compared to what we had been believed to witness…

One man, Peter Harrison, agent to both Lucas Neill and Andy Todd, both of whom have been heavily linked with moves away from Ewood Park in recent times, would come out of the programme in a, shall I say less than flattering light.

With Harrison having openly admitted to the undercover Panorama informant Knut auf dem Berge (a fully licensed UEFA qualified freelance coach of over twenty years, having played at semi-professional level for Germany) prior to his meeting with Harry Redknapp that he would “tout” Todd’s services to him as he certainly did makes you think is Harrison putting ideas in his players heads?

Previously Harrison would say on Lucas Neill, and I quote:

He has enjoyed his time there, he loves the club and the fans and he is happy there, he just feels it is time for a change in career. If he has to stay he will have to stay, but this is not about money at all.”

Todd’s thoughts that “things had gone stale” for him at Rovers coupled with Harrison`s claims that Neill “just feels it is time for change” seem too similar in reasons really, and lead you to thinking, rightly or wrongly are his clients really being guided to their best interests?

The point being here, despite some fine performances for Rovers and Australia in recent years, his showings during the World Cup for the Socceroos only raised his profile, and should he genuinely feel that a move will further his career and be in his best interests you could understand why Neill would want to move on, but is it him or an outside influence persuading him?

The players mind is probably already made up, and despite Brad Friedel’s hopes that an extended UEFA Cup run might change Neill’s mind, which I doubt it will, with all that was shown one can’t help but think is a move from Rovers really in Neill’s or Harrison’s best interests…
