Nothing to Prove

With the FA Cup Semi Final virtually upon us sasman shares his thoughts from his Aussie base. The full title was “Nothing to Prove (If you don’t like us then get !@#@#!!)” but this was too long to use?

There are moments that we remember, and moments that we forget. Over the last few years, it’s often the moments that are remembered which have given us the reputation of bully boys. Whether it be the semi final with Arsenal or our first game against Chelsea and the new regime, our club is often remembered for some of the not so good incidents. Sure, at least we can put our hands up and admit Andy Todd should not of stuck his elbow in on Van Persie. Sure we did play over physically against Chelsea and, quote Mourinho, that blond boy in the middle made so many fouls (Savage).

But why aren’t we remembered for some of the fantastic moments over the years. I believe last year we had 3 out of the top ten goals of the year including Tugay and MGP’s wonder strikes. I cant even remember how many times Tugay’s flashing volleys have been flashed over the news worldwide. If it was Lampard, Rooney or Ronaldinho, I’m sure the media would be having a blast. But no it’s just poor old 36-year-old Tugay. What about our solid defensive efforts this time round against Arsenal in the cup. Or even the rising of potential superstars of England in Derbyshire, Bentley and now even Warnock is getting the chance to shine. How about when Hughesy turned a team of no names who could only kick and shove into a football team, escaped the claws of relegation, managed to stride their way into Europe and did not let anyone down with some fantastic results home and abroad. With a bit of luck we could have still been in the cup.

Mark this day down. 15 April, 2007. The day has already started, a step towards the future. Read this, “To be fair we played them this season three times and had no problems. Difficult matches, fighting matches and aggressive, but very correct. Mark [Hughes] played many semis and FA Cup Finals and knows the respect you must have“. Are we receiving a compliment in the media. What’s more surprising is who this is from. The so called Special one, Mr Jose Mourinho. For a man of this status, to come out and proclaim that we are playing “very correct”, indicates how far we have come. Only a few years ago he was throwing tantrums, effectively giving us the label of Bully Boys. That comment hurt. Bully Boys. What people still struggle to understand is we did what anyone would do to survive, and it worked. But after this statement, it is time to move on. No longer are we Bully boys, with Mourinho further stating that he fears the dreams of our players. Sure, who honestly believes we are going to walk into Old Trafford, pump a few goals in and march onto Wembley. This is our dream, the dream of the Blackburn players, the town of Blackburn, and all the fans, even all the way from Sydney!

So lets make this dream happen tonight, and even if we don’t win, I will be proud we made it this far and have had one of the toughest draws. Everton, Luton, Arsenal and Manchester City. Now Chelsea then Manchester United, 5 top flight teams, 3 out of the top 4. We never back out of the challenge and tonight is just another one. So we have nothing to prove, and if you still don’t like how we play, then get stuffed!
