Roque Santa Cruz may have been the main draw for many Blackburn Rovers fans (and possibly Preston North End as well?!?!) on Saturday, but he was not the only Rover making his debut!

19-year-old left-back Martin Olsson also made his senior bow for the club during the 3-0 victory over Preston at Deepdale. The Under-19 Swedish International came on with thirty minutes to play as a substitute for Stephen Warnock, and the youngster did not disappoint.

A broken foot sustained by Bruno Berner last week during the defeat to Huddersfield has given Glyn Hodges’ reserve regular a chance to stake a claim for a first team squad place this season (with him awarded a squad number of 29 last week), this injury is something which Olsson acknowledges, and although he does feel for Berner he is looking to make them of his chance, should more come along.

Olsson told the Official Blackburn Rovers Website:

It was very good, I was nervous at first. But everyone gave me confidence and told me to play as I usually play and I started relaxing.

“It has been good news for me, I’ve been playing well this week and last year I played well too, so it is so good to get my chance now.

“It is unfortunate for Bruno, I feel sorry for him, but I have now my chance now and I’ll take it and try to do my best
.”

Rovers Manager Mark Hughes was pleased with what he saw from Olsson, and he added:

Martin Olsson is a young player we’ve got high hopes for. I thought he did really well and he enjoyed his taste of first team football.”
