One Down, Five to Go!

Blackburn Rovers’ hopes of European football next season, slim as they might have been (or still are?) were kept alive last night with a 3-1 victory over Watford.

Realistically to have any chance of playing UEFA Cup football again in the 2007-2008 season we HAD to win all six of our remaining fixtures, so having won the first that’s one down, five to go!

FINALLY we broke the hoodoo of slipping up to teams that we should be beating (with all due respect to Watford) when a classy first half display, first half of the first half in particular saw us to three much needed points. A fast tempo upbeat showing, the deadly accuracy of David Bentley’s passing, towering height of Christopher Samba, pace and power of Jason Roberts and guile of Benni McCarthy made sure we didn’t slip up.

So often this season we’ve lost to teams that we shouldn’t have, teams that have been on bad runs of form, couldn’t win away, were in the bottom three etc. teams that should have been beaten but for whatever reason weren’t as we’ve more often than not contrived to lose these matches. After finally breaking this jinx against Watford hopefully we can mount one last push for European football next term.

To have ANY hope we had to win, and we did now we HAVE to follow it up and beat another side on Saturday that we should be beating (again I mean this with all due respect), this side being Fulham.

Charlton Athletic (home), Newcastle United (away), Tottenham Hotspur (away) and Reading (home) follow. Not a bad looking fixture list, so after finally breaking our jinx you would hope we can go on and get three points against Fulham, Charlton and Newcastle, this would then leave our destiny almost certainly well and truly in our own hands, although having said that we may still have to rely on others to a degree.

These are the remaining fixtures our European rivals face:
Portsmouth – Aston Villa (away), Liverpool (home), Everton (away) & Arsenal (home).
Tottenham – Arsenal (home), Middlesbrough (away), Charlton (away), Rovers (home) & Manchester City (home).
Reading – Bolton (away), Newcastle (home), Watford (home) & Rovers (away).

And again to clarify these are our remaining fixtures:
Fulham (away), Charlton (home), Newcastle (away), Tottenham (away) & Reading (home).

Can we do it?!?!
