Penalty Hero Robbo’s Delight

Blackburn Rovers made it into the Carling Cup Semi-Finals after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Chelsea on Wednesday Evening.

Rovers took an early lead through Nikola Kalinic, however, Chelsea equalised in the second half before taking the lead. Rovers weren’t going to be beaten though and Brett Emerton drew us level and that meant Extra-Time. Benni McCarthy’s penalty looked as though it had won it but a last gasp equaliser from Paulo Ferreira meant it went to penalties.

Many would then have expected Rovers to be beaten but enter England International (at least should be!!) Paul Robinson who saved from Michael Ballack and Gael Kakuta to send us through 4-3 on penalties after the 3-3 draw. The Rovers goalkeeper was delighted for us to make the Semi-Finals and now wants us to make that Wembley occasion.

Robinson told Sky Sports News: “For a club like us to be in the semi-final is fantastic.

“Realistically we are not going to challenge for league honours.

“So to be in a competition like this, with the possibility of going to Wembley for ourselves and the fans is great.

A penalty shootout was probably the last thing that Sam Allardyce would’ve needed as he recovers from his heart operation, however, Robbo found time to joke about this being a good test for him lol!!

He added: “We just had to make sure his heart operation was working tonight, I think it would have been a good test.

Getting drawn against Aston Villa in the Semi-Finals is also not a bad draw really is it. That’ll mean we play them three times in as many (maybe less) weeks in the FA Cup Third Round and the two legged Carling Cup Semi Final in January. I bet we can’t wait can we!!
