Swiss born Bruno Berner started his career in his native Switzerland but has a vast experience of football around Europe, both at club and International level.

Berner came through the youth system with Grasshoppers, signing professionally with the Swiss outfit in 1997. During a five-year stint (which also included an unsuccessful loan spell to Spanish side Real Oviedo, which only saw him play one game, he did however score) he became a regular.

The summer of 2002 saw Berner make the short switch into German football with Freiburg, with him being an almost ever present during his three-years with the club. In 2005 Berner decided he wanted to return home and signed a deal with Swiss Giants Basle, a team that proved to be a UEFA Cup opponent for Rovers during our 2006-2007 campaign.

With first team football limited and a change wanted Berner, like so many before him underwent a trial in the aim of impressing Mark Hughes. This trial during the January 2007 transfer window proved successful and Berner signed an initial 18-month deal with the option of a further year should all parties be happy shortly before the January window closed.

The Swiss International, a member of their 2004 European Championship squad, comes with a reputation of being very versatile with him able to play as a left-back, central defender, left-midfielder/winger or even up front if needed! It was in fact this versatility that prompted Hughes to snap him up for a small undisclosed fee.

We haven’t seen a great deal of Berner since his signing but his experience alone makes him a very valuable asset to the Rovers squad.
