Blackburn Rovers boss Mark Hughes has handed out praise to Morten Gamst Pedersen for his late winner but also acknowledged the part Sheffield United played.

Rovers were far from their best in the 2-1 victory over Sheffield United on Saturday and Hughes admits this whilst lavishing Gamst Pedersen for his fantastic injury time free kick winner:

We always feel that if we get Morten in that position on the football field then he has the ability to convert chances like that.

I’ve seen Morten do that time and time again in training, and once he gets in range it is very difficult to stop.

It was a great strike, we’ve won the game, we haven’t played particularly well but that is credit to Sheffield United because they worked extremely hard.

We’ve had a frustrating day for long periods, they worked extremely hard and it looked like it would end all square.

Yeah, they worked extremely hard but we kept going and got our reward.

Two debuts, David Dunn coming back and Jason Roberts as well so all in all we can be pleased.”

Despite a below par performance there were pluses as Sparky had said, the biggest for me the fact that we won a game when well below our best, which we often haven’t this season! The injury to Matt Derbyshire and red card to Stephen Warnock obvious minuses but this will in a funny kind of way save Sparky the dilemma of whether or not to leave Derbyshire out in place of the returning Jason Roberts, giving him a run to get back up to speed while Derbyshire recovers, Bruno Berner will also be given a chance in Warnock’s suspended absence.

The importance of next weeks game with Everton can’t be understated, three points and we are right amongst the UEFA Cup challengers, defeat and they could all stretch their lead…

  • Obviously I’d not have wanted Derbs injured (especially for up to a month!) but this does save Sparky having to decide whether or not to leave him out for JR. Had he done so this could have been viewed as him being dropped (even though it wouldn’t have been) and could have had a negative effect on him. As it is JR can now have a run in the side (potentially?) and Derbs a little break which should see him come back even hungrier! Personally I think JR and Derbs will rotate when both fit, even if this means Derbs starting from the bench more often than not, which he would have accepted… for this season, and maybe the next anyway I’m sure. Frodo of the Shire still has a MASSIVE part to play in this season. Injuries are nothing new to us though are they!!!

  • We need somet off the Everton game. We have the chance to move up the league in the upcoming weeks and it is a chance we should grab with Jay Roberts and Ryan back in the frame.

  • Everton will be massive. We need Gamst to continue his form and we are still due some goals from JR, so a win maybe?!? Gamst is playing amazing at the moment and I think that winning goal on Sat meant an awful lot to him.

  • I have to admit Blade1889 in fairness to Sparky the quotes were from two interviews but even so he’s used “they worked extremely hard” quite a lot hasn’t he!

  • You can see how much all goals and wins are meaning to MGP and all the lads can’t you. Everton will be a real tough game, much closer than the Cup game but have this feeling we’ll come away with three points with the aid of the Admiral for sure and maybe just something from JR?!?!

  • HAHA, i watched MOTD and linekar said summat like “wow, he seems to be in goal of the month every month doesnt he” and i thought, aye but we never win one cos of your big club bias ya smarmy tw*t

  • I’ve just booked my tickets for the game… anyone else going… if its an important game we need to show our support. Get as many there as possible. I personally think HDM should attend.

  • AH mate, i havent been for 18 months now. I had a season ticket in 2002-3 season, but living near Cardiff is kinda prohibitive to go to home games every week!! When i next go, and i am aiming for before the end of the season, ill PM you, if you are going also, maybe we can meet up before the game. Upper tier? Blackburn end? JW stand? Or are we at goodison? lol, doesnt life get in the way of football lol

  • Mikey is I could make it up to Mersyside this weekend I’d be there. It’s a MASSIVE game aint it guys. Expectation is growning by the day!

  • Yeah a must win, but one i think we now have the edge in physcologically. With that in mind I belivev we can go there and get something. One last major effort before Germany!
