Blackburn Rovers boss Mark Hughes has handed out praise to Morten Gamst Pedersen for his late winner but also acknowledged the part Sheffield United played.

Rovers were far from their best in the 2-1 victory over Sheffield United on Saturday and Hughes admits this whilst lavishing Gamst Pedersen for his fantastic injury time free kick winner:

We always feel that if we get Morten in that position on the football field then he has the ability to convert chances like that.

I’ve seen Morten do that time and time again in training, and once he gets in range it is very difficult to stop.

It was a great strike, we’ve won the game, we haven’t played particularly well but that is credit to Sheffield United because they worked extremely hard.

We’ve had a frustrating day for long periods, they worked extremely hard and it looked like it would end all square.

Yeah, they worked extremely hard but we kept going and got our reward.

Two debuts, David Dunn coming back and Jason Roberts as well so all in all we can be pleased.”

Despite a below par performance there were pluses as Sparky had said, the biggest for me the fact that we won a game when well below our best, which we often haven’t this season! The injury to Matt Derbyshire and red card to Stephen Warnock obvious minuses but this will in a funny kind of way save Sparky the dilemma of whether or not to leave Derbyshire out in place of the returning Jason Roberts, giving him a run to get back up to speed while Derbyshire recovers, Bruno Berner will also be given a chance in Warnock’s suspended absence.

The importance of next weeks game with Everton can’t be understated, three points and we are right amongst the UEFA Cup challengers, defeat and they could all stretch their lead…
