Progressive Play Un-Rewarded

Hughes has told the official site that he was proud of the way Rovers battled in the 4-2 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Following a poor start, our troops rallied to go in at half time on level terms. Hughes said:

‘I thought we were excellent in the first half, we gave ourselves a mountain to climb by going two goals down. I thought the penalty was a harsh decision and we didn’t really defend the first goal, they caught us cold and we found ourselves two goals down very quickly. You wonder what kind of day you are going to have in the office , but fair play to us I thought we were excellent in the first half, we dominated play and caused them problems and got right back into the game.’

On the second half Hughes added:

‘Second half it was very much more of the same, I felt we were very much in the game, and we had a real determination to pull off a shock, but the difference today was their delivery into the box, with the quality of players they have they got great delivery and really that was the only way I could see us conceding. The delivery for the third goal was excellent, very hard to deal with, then we went to try to get back on level terms and they got a lucky deflection for the fourth.’

He also thinks Rovers style was good but un-rewarded:

‘Our play was very progressive, but went without reward. Overall I was pleased, we caused them some problems especially in the first half. We are on a good run, and we made a very good team look ordinary at times. Certainly our first half performance merited some reward but it wasn’t to be, we showed a lot of character to try to get back into the game.’

Next up is Charlton at home, we need to show the same character and pick up all three points, get us moving in the right direction up the league.
