Premiership new boys Reading have moved quickly to quash rumours that Kevin Doyle may move away from the Madejski Stadium to Blackburn Rovers or anywhere else for that matter.

As the rumour mill gathers pace with the January transfer window almost upon us Readings 23-year-old Republic of Ireland International was said to be a Rovers target with us willing to pay BIG money for the highly talented youngster. Some reports suggest as much as a staggering £8 million!

Since Doyle’s arrival at Reading in June 2005 for a bargain £78,000 from Cork City the Irishman has proved instrumental in Reading dramatic rise to the top scoring goals a plenty to fire the club to the Championship Title and into the Premiership. What makes this even more amazing is Doyle was actually brought to act as cover for Dave Kitson and Leroy Lita! Injuries handed him his chance and he took it with both hands, or should that be feet!

His form saw him gain International recognition with the Republic at senior level earlier this year and also saw him named as the Championship Fan’s Player of the Year for the 2005-2006 season, with him also being voted into the Championship team of the Year by the PFA.

Doyle has taken to the Premiership like a duck to water turning in a series of impressive displays and continuing his goalscoring form so it is no wonder he is being linked with other sides, however Readings Director of Football Nicky Hammond was quick to point our Doyle has only recently signed a new contract when he spoke to the Reading Chronicle about Readings determination to keep hold of the Irish star:

Kevin Doyle signed a new contract recently and he won’t be going anywhere.

We want to establish ourselves in the Premiership and we won’t do that by selling our best players.”

As good as Doyle is personally I don’t think that the forward line is one we need to look at too much so I would like to see money spent in January (if we will do so?) on other areas, especially midfield. Time to turn our thoughts to Mr Beckham then!

Also although you want what is best for your club as I am also a MASSIVE fan of football in general I hope Doyle will stay with Reading for at least this season to aid them in their quests to remain in the top-flight, which early indications (despite a slight blip in form recently) suggest they can. Obviously if it was a choice between us and them they will always lose…
