Blackburn Rovers midfielder Steven Reid has been recalled to the Republic of Ireland squad for their upcoming International with Wales.

Despite not playing a first team match for club or country for more than a year (after a nightmare time with injuries) with him now getting close to his Rovers return Reid has been called up for Ireland’s final European Championship Qualifier taking place in Cardiff on 17th November.

Ireland’s caretaker manager Don Givens told the Football Association of Ireland’s Official Website: “I am delighted Steven is back to full fitness after his injury problems and it will be a big boost for us to have him in the squad.”

This shows just how important the Irish feel Reidy is to them if they are so keen to get him back involved, despite his lack of first team football. Personally I’m not sure if this is the right thing though?!?!

  • I’ve got to admit that I am VERY surprised with this, but it shows that he must be VERY close to being ready to play for Rovers again.
So long as he doesn’t come back injured this time!

  • Sparky has come out today though and said he will ask for Reid to be withdrawn, finally a bit of common sense. Sorry Durks lol

  • im glad he will be withdrawn last thing anyone needs is him gettin injured when he is not ready and sparky will be the judge of that! plus we havent qualified so i want to see a few of the younger lads get a go its a nothing match and we know wat reidy is all about time to give others a chance!

  • He needs to be wothdrawn from the international, Ireland are out and not even playing for pride anymore, Reid needs to be eased into the game now more than ever after such a long time out. I hope the FAI see sense on this one!!

  • I have a feeling Ireland are just keen for as many bodies as possible but it would be a HUGE risk to play befre he is ready.

  • will it ever happen – As FreidelNo.1 says he was a couple of seasobs back before his injury nightmare, but he HASN’T played a first team match in well over as year, which is what made this call-up all the more ridiculous.
