Rovers midfielder Steven Reid played the full 90 minutes of the Republic of Ireland’s unfortunate 1-0 European Championship Qualifying defeat at the hands of Germany.

Reid, who had one free kick, which Jens Lehmann had to get behind to save, would also be booked as a brave Ireland slipped to defeat in Germany thanks to a deflected Lukas Podolski free kick.

It would be a former Rovers player Shay Given who would be the biggest hero for Ireland in defeat though. The Newcastle United Goalkeeper who spent three years at Ewood Park making only three first team appearances following his arrival from Celtic as an 18-year-old in 1994. Despite being highly rated even then Given was unfortunate enough to have Tim Flowers as competition at the time.

Had it not been for at least three world class saves from Given and his woodwork twice saving him when he was beaten the 1-0 defeat could have been worse, although the goal itself would come in very fortuitous fashion, from a cruelly deflected Lukas Podolski free kick that not even Given to keep out.
