Roberts Almost Signed for Rivals

Jason Roberts has admitted that he came close to joining the weekend’s opponents Charlton Athletic before he signed for Blackburn Rovers last summer.

Instead of scoring twice against Charlton on Saturday in Rovers’ 4-1 victory at Ewood Park, had the Addicks got their way they could have seen him maybe scoring for them instead?

Roberts said:

I did have talks with Charlton. They are a club I admire and I still hope they can stay up.

“We spoke about a move after it was clear I was leaving Wigan. But Alan Curbishley had just left and it wasn’t clear how they’d be without him and Blackburn were offering me UEFA Cup football.

“I can’t say I’ve got any regrets when you look at the league table. We’re chasing Europe again and that’s where I want to be
.”

After an injury-ravaged season Roberts is starting to show why Mark Hughes was so keen to sign him, and who knows had Charlton signed him maybe their season could have been different? I don’t doubt for one minute that he would have made the perfect foil for Darren Bent as he has, and will continue to do so for Benni McCarthy (and potentially Matt Derbyshire.)
