Blackburn have already managed to tempt one player, Peter Whittingham – who signed a two year deal last week – to drop down from the Championship to come to Ewood Park. According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Tony Mowbray’s hoping to do the same with Richie Smallwood.

Had Smallwood accepted a new contract offer from Rotherham he would face Blackburn in League One. However, having turned down the deal the midfielder could line up against the Millers if convinced to join Rovers.

Smallwood, 26, is reportedly attracting interest from the Championship but it’s hoped the out-of-contract ex-Middlesbrough midfielder, who played under Mowbray for three years, can be tempted to work with his former boss once again – he spent a spell in League One last season on loan at Scunthorpe.

The same report said RC Lens’ John Bostock is also a player of interest to Blackburn.

But, despite the fact the Ligue 2 Player of the Year will probably leave Lens, interest from French topflight clubs could scupper any hopes Blackburn have of signing the midfielder. Not to mention the fact Bostock, 25, is under contract so a fee would be involved.
