Charlie Mulgrew’s Blackburn career has been stop start so far as the former Celtic man has suffered a number of setbacks – his latest was sustained in the 3-2 defeat at Preston on Saturday.

A groin injury forced him off at Deepdale with him set to miss the visit of Brighton to Ewood Park this evening. It’s unclear at the moment as to how much longer he’ll be on the sidelines.

Owen Coyle has said the injury has ‘settle down.’ Mulgrew underwent a scan earlier this week that has left the boss hopeful he wouldn’t be out for too long. He told rovers.co.uk.

‘He is having scan as we speak. It felt better yesterday than what it did when he came off in the game, so it has settled down a little bit. But we have to find out the extent of it in terms of how long it will be. Hopefully it will be grade one then it won’t be too long, but we await that news.’

Mulgrew came to Ewood in the summer as a free agent following his exit from the Scottish Champions. Coyle has used him in a number of positions from midfield to central defence.

According to Coyle wherever Mulgrew’s played he’s shown the quality that made him so keen to sign the Scot.

The boss went on to finish.

‘When we signed him we knew how good a player he was and how good a piece of business it was. He has shown his quality, he is so composed on the ball, a terrific leader, he has great technique and a wonderful player. He looked very comfortable in the game again on Saturday, so to be without him will be a loss. But we’ll get on with it and hopefully it won’t be too long until Charlie is back.’

It was confirmed aside from ‘bumps and bruises’ Blackburn wouldn’t have any other injury concerns to content with. In the absence of Mulgrew former Brighton captain Gordon Greer is also set to return to the side.
