Blackburn Rovers boss Mark Hughes was left fuming after the 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur yesterday afternoon, with referee Phil Dowd at the centre of this anger.

The main source of Hughes’ anger was the decision to show Tugay his red card. Speaking to Sky Sports immediately after the game Hughes said:

I’m incensed, it was a genuine attempt to get across the guy, no intent whatsoever.

We tried to get the assistant to change his mind but he decided to send him off.”

Having put in another masterful display looking so comfortable on the ball, spreading the passes so well and always looking to be involved Tugay’s magnificent volley looked as though it could have won Rovers the game and with it him the Man of the Match award he clearly deserved, so a clearly very frustrated and angry Sparky added:

It has taken the edge off the game for Tugay. (Followed by a large sigh!)

Everybody was very disappointed he was sent off because you want to see people like him play.”

To compound things Rovers were again denied a penalty for what seemed a clear handball from Mido, Sparky also said:

Mido clearly handballed soon afterwards and these are big decisions. This is three or four occasions this season when referees have not got these big decisions right.

It’s a game we should have won comfortably.

We were by far the most strong and powerful team and, with an even wicket, we would have won comfortably.

Mr Dowd did not have the best of games to say the least. I’m sure he would admit he has had a shocker.”

I’m not so sure on Sparky’s views on it being a game we should have won comfortably but I will totally agree with his views on Dowd and the decisions again going against Rovers as has so often been the case this season!
