The draw for the third round of the Carling Cup will be made at lunchtime today with Blackburn Rovers finding out if they will face a fellow Premiership side, or a potential banana skin…

Due to the clubs involvement in Europe they, along with the other sides with such commitments received a bye into the third round with other Premiership sides having entered the competition in round two, with several having already tumbled out.

The 2001-2002 season would see Rovers win the trophy when under its Worthington Cup guise, making the semi-finals the following year, and last season Rovers lost to the eventually winners, Manchester United, also in the semi-finals. Rovers would go into the game with whomever they play with high expectations due to the competition having been kind to them on the whole thus far this decade, although I’m sure Mark Hughes would rather avoid the likes of the following.

Crewe Alexandra: The League One side knocked out last seasons beaten finalists Wigan Athletic 2-0 on Tuesday night. Crewe are notoriously tough to play in Cup competitions, especially on home soil.

Chesterfield: Manchester City found out to their cost in their 2-1 away defeat on Wednesday night that the League One side are no pushovers when they knocked a top flight club out of the League Cup for the first time in their history.

Doncaster Rovers: Last season’s League Cup giant killers knocked out Premiership sides Manchester City and Aston Villa, knocking out Championship side Derby County on penalties on Wednesday night. The League One side had been 3-0 up before Derby came back to force extra time and penalties, but Doncaster were not to be denied.

Wycombe Wanderers: Wycombe are no strangers to giant killing Cup exploits. The League Two side came up trumps again as they knocked out Chris Coleman’s Fulham on Wednesday night when beating Fulham at Craven Cottage 2-1.

Notts County: Another League Two side caused a major upset when travelling to a Premiership side and beating them on their own turf. Middlesbrough (Rovers’ opponents today in the Premiership) would be knocked out 1-0 on Wednesday at the Riverside.
