It had been reported in a Sunday tabloid that Blackburn Rovers wanted to sign Bolton Wanderers striker Nicolas Anelka, but this has been dismissed.

The suggestion was that Rovers manager Mark Hughes had sounded French International Anelka out, and would be wanting funds to make a move when the transfer window re-opened in January, however, it was also reported that in order to make such a move players would have to be sold to raise the funds with is claimed that Benni McCarthy would be the player sold. All of this has been dismissed by “a senior source within the boardroom”.

This source told the Telegraph: “Nicolas Anelka’s name has been mentioned in the past, along with many others, but there are no plans to make a move for him next month, and we have no intention of selling Benni McCarthy either.”
