Rovers Duo in England Squad

Stuart Peace has named David Bentley and Matt Derbyshire in his England under-21 squad for this summers European Championships.

With Pearce having to narrow down his initial selection of players Bentley and Derbyshire have not been axed, and they will be a part of a strong looking England squad heading off to Holland early next month.

Bentley, fresh from his senior call up, will return to the under-21’s for the Championships after the senior games with Brazil (friendly) and Estonia (European Championship Qualifier) for what will be his under-21 swansong. Even if Bents doesn’t become a regular in the senior side (which if he carries on playing like he has he wont have a problem!) he would almost certainly be too old for the under-21’s next season.

Derbyshire on the other hand will still qualify (I believe) so will be looking to press home his claims for senior involvement through his continued participation in the under-21’s and further progress with Rovers next season.

Mark Hughes is apparently concerned by Bentley’s involvement, as he feels this could lead to burnout. Personally with only a few games being played at these Finals (not forgetting the fact Bents is 21!) he should be fine and ready for our Intertoto Cup adventure at the end of July.
